U.S.-Iran Conflict Escalates to Northern Iran; Blockade and Sanctions Tighten

The conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified significantly over the last 24 hours, marked by a sixth consecutive night of U.S. airstrikes that have now expanded into northern Iran. U.S. jets targeted military and industrial sites near Tehran and Semnan—the center of Iran’s ballistic missile and space programs—as well as infrastructure in Khuzestan and Sistan-Baluchestan. CENTCOM reported strikes on Greater Tunb Island to weaken Iran's grip on the Strait of Hormuz, while naval forces have begun enforcing a total blockade, boarding non-compliant vessels and redirecting trade. President Trump has signaled a further hardening of the U.S. position, threatening to target Iranian power plants and bridges next week if Tehran refuses to negotiate. The President also stated that ground forces have not been ruled out for a potential seizure of Kharg Island, Iran's critical oil export terminal. In tandem with the military kinetic action, the U.S. has reimposed a comprehensive sanctions package aimed at crippling Iran’s oil exports and its use of cryptocurrency to bypass international finance. Iran has responded with direct missile strikes on U.S. facilities in Qatar and coordinated proxy attacks across Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard characterized the strikes as a "punishment" for U.S. aggression. The escalation has resulted in civilian casualties, including seven deaths following bridge collapses in Bandar Khamir. With the collapse of the June Memorandum of Understanding and no active diplomatic channels currently functioning, the region faces heightened concerns regarding global energy price surges and further military expansion.
