U.S.-Iran Conflict Escalates as Airstrikes Reach Tehran and Total Naval Blockade Resumes

The conflict between the United States and Iran has accelerated into a broad strategic air war. Early Thursday, U.S. forces launched airstrikes targeting the peripheries of Tehran and Semnan province—a hub for Iran’s ballistic missile and space programs—as well as Greater Tunb Island. This follows President Trump's decision to resume a total naval blockade of Iranian ports. During the operation, U.S. forces utilized one-way attack sea drones for the first time, reportedly firing on a Curaçao-flagged tanker near Kharg Island for an alleged blockade breach. In response, Tehran has declared an "existential war" and launched a series of retaliatory ballistic missile strikes across the region. Iran targeted Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan, where officials reported eight interceptions, along with Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. Iranian military officials warned that any U.S. hits on Iranian domestic infrastructure, such as power plants or bridges, would be met with the destruction of infrastructure across the Gulf region. Amid the heavy fighting, a potential diplomatic opening emerged as Iran released a U.S. citizen. Analysts suggest the move may be intended to prevent a total descent into all-out war, even as the interim peace memorandum from last month has completely collapsed. Regional allies, including the UAE and Jordan, have condemned Iran’s strikes as a violation of sovereignty, while President Trump reportedly considers further expansion of military operations following high-level briefings.
