The U.S.-Iran conflict entered a new phase of tactical escalation between July 12 and 13, 2026, marked by the first operational deployment of U.S. one-way attack sea drones. U.S. CENTCOM utilized the unmanned vessels alongside traditional airpower to strike dozens of coastal targets in southern Iran, including Sirik and Bandar Abbas. These strikes targeted Iranian air-defense systems, radar sites, and Revolutionary Guard naval assets. Despite the intensity of the campaign, U.S. officials indicated a strategy of "strike and pause" to provide windows for back-channel diplomacy and prevent an uncontrolled regional war. On the diplomatic front, Tehran has formally suspended its commitments under the June memorandum of understanding (MoU). At the same time, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority declared the Strait of Hormuz impassable, a claim the Trump administration has rejected, asserting that the U.S. will maintain freedom of navigation in the vital waterway. The economic impact of the escalation is intensifying as oil prices climb and commercial shipping through the Strait slows. The security environment worsened following an Iranian attack on a commercial container ship, which left one crew member missing. While Iran maintains that its strikes are strictly limited to U.S. military logistics and not directed at neighboring sovereigns, both the UAE and Bahrain have reported direct missile and drone threats, signaling a breakdown in regional stability.
