U.S.-Iran Conflict Intensifies as Trump Declares Ceasefire Agreement Over

Tensions between the United States and Iran reached a critical flashpoint on July 8 after President Donald Trump declared the interim Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) "over." The collapse of the agreement followed a series of Iranian attacks on three commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the U.S. military launched extensive strikes against Iranian naval vessels and missile sites in southern Iran, aimed at imposing "heavy costs" for the disruption of international shipping. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed support for the U.S. military action, calling the strikes necessary for global security. On the economic front, the U.S. Treasury revoked a June 22 general license that had previously allowed Iran to sell crude oil and petrochemicals. Iran has been given until July 17 to wind down these transactions, a move that triggered an immediate 3% surge in global oil prices. The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the revocation as a "breach of the framework agreement," while President Masoud Pezeshkian compared U.S. international strategy to the arbitrary behavior of a soccer tournament organizer. Although President Trump stated that dealing with Tehran is a "waste of time," he indicated that back-channel diplomatic discussions may continue for the time being. The military escalation expanded quickly as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes against U.S. military installations at Bahrain’s Fifth Naval District and Kuwait’s Ali Al Salem Air Base. The IRGC also reported shooting down a U.S. MQ-9 drone during the engagement. These events mark the most severe escalation since the conclusion of Operation Epic Fury in May, heightening international anxiety regarding a return to full-scale regional warfare.
