U.S. and Iran Exchange Strikes as Ceasefire Talks Loom

Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply over the last 24 hours following a series of military engagements near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command reported shooting down four Iranian drones before conducting retaliatory strikes against Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites on Goruk and Qeshm Island. In response, Iran launched seven ballistic missiles targeting locations in Kuwait and Bahrain. U.S. officials confirmed that six of the missiles were intercepted and one failed, resulting in no casualties for U.S. personnel. Despite the military escalation, diplomatic channels remain active. Reports indicate that U.S. and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative agreement approximately one week ago to extend a ceasefire by 60 days and reopen discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear program. However, the durability of this agreement is being tested by ongoing maritime enforcement, including the U.S. seizure of a sanctioned oil tanker and a broader blockade of Iranian ports that has caused a significant spike in global energy prices. The conflict is also showing signs of regional expansion. Strikes in southern Lebanon reportedly killed nine people, while Iran-linked activity continues to impact Bahrain and Kuwait. In Washington, President Donald Trump stated the situation "seems to be going quite well" during an emergency meeting on the crisis. Meanwhile, Tehran’s foreign ministry has issued warnings that the United States will be held responsible for the consequences of its "illegal actions" in the region.
