U.S. Escalates Maritime Blockade on Iran; Nuclear Talks Stalled Over Asset Release

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has significantly intensified its maritime enforcement against Iran, broadening the scope of its ongoing naval blockade. On May 29, U.S. forces disabled the Gambia-flagged vessel M/V Lian Star after it attempted to run the blockade. New directives from CENTCOM now state that any ship assisting Iranian transfers, including ship-to-ship operations, will be considered in violation. Simultaneously, regional tensions remain high as Iran-backed Hezbollah continues to launch periodic drone and rocket strikes into northern Israel. Attacks targeting Kiryat Shmona and Safed highlight the interconnected nature of the maritime blockade and the broader proxy conflicts across the Middle East. As of May 31, no formal breakthroughs in inspections or direct diplomatic channels have been reported.
