U.S. Strikes Targets in Southern Iran as Doha Peace Talks Resume

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted a series of strikes on Monday targeting missile-launch sites and mine-laying boats in southern Iran. Officials described the operation as a self-defense measure intended to protect American personnel from imminent threats. The military action occurred just as Iranian negotiators arrived in Doha for a critical round of talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, adding significant pressure to the diplomatic process. In a new development, President Donald Trump has introduced a political condition to the negotiations, calling for Saudi Arabia and five other Muslim-majority nations to join the Abraham Accords as part of a comprehensive regional settlement. While the U.S. is considering phased sanctions relief in exchange for Iran disposing of its enriched uranium stockpile, Tehran has signaled that a final agreement is not imminent and remains subject to approval by the Supreme Leader. The regional situation is further complicated by intensified fighting involving Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Although a separate front, the spillover continues to strain the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. CENTCOM maintained that while it is exercising restraint during the ceasefire period, it will continue to take necessary kinetic action to defend its forces against maritime and ballistic threats.
