U.S. and Israeli military forces have intensified their air campaign against Iran, conducting over 6,500 sorties against 7,000 targets across major cities including Tehran, Isfahan, and Tabriz. U.S. Central Command reports significant damage to IRGC Navy facilities and the destruction of over 100 Iranian vessels. In a major leadership blow, the IDF confirmed the elimination of Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and Iran's de facto leader, during a strike near the capital. Operations also expanded into Iraq, where a U.S. strike in Baghdad killed several individuals, including Abu Ali Al-Askari, a top security leader for the Hezbollah Brigades. On the diplomatic front, the United States and France are engaging with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to negotiate the implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and the disarmament of Hezbollah. However, domestic political factions in Lebanon, including the "Shia duo," remain resistant to negotiations while active hostilities continue. Concurrently, military efforts are focused on securing the Strait of Hormuz to prevent Iranian disruptions to international shipping lanes amid the escalating regional violence. The conflict is having immediate global economic and humanitarian consequences. Since the onset of strikes on February 28, 2026, a massive wave of refugees has been displaced across the Middle East. Economically, crude oil prices have jumped from $66.96 to over $90 per barrel, causing U.S. diesel prices to climb to $3.90 per gallon. These rising energy and fertilizer costs are creating significant financial pressure on the U.S. agricultural sector, specifically threatening 2026 returns for corn and soybean producers.
