In his first public statement since assuming power, Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei vowed on March 13 to maintain the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Khamenei, who succeeded his father following a February 28 assassination, urged Middle Eastern nations to shut down U.S. military bases used to stage attacks on Iran. This diplomatic maneuver coincides with intensified military pressure from U.S. and Israeli forces, who continued targeting Iranian air defense systems to erode Tehran’s defensive capabilities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded with his first press briefing since the start of the campaign, pledging to continue bombardments in Iran and Lebanon. Netanyahu stated that Israel is now "initiating" attacks with unprecedented force and explicitly threatened the assassination of the new Supreme Leader. Meanwhile, humanitarian concerns are mounting as explosions hit central Tehran during an "al-Quds Day" rally, resulting in civilian casualties. Reports indicate that the conflict has already displaced approximately 3.2 million people. Domestically, the Trump administration faces growing opposition to the conflict's expansion. Over 250 advocacy groups have urged Congress to reject a $50 billion Pentagon funding request for the war. This pushback follows a March 12 refueling aircraft crash in western Iraq that killed at least four U.S. service members, with rescue operations still underway for two others. Despite the escalating strikes, no new retaliatory actions from Iran were reported in the latest military updates.
